Come and Sing the Psalms — Longridge Town Centre

For an hour we'll be doing something the people of God have done for thousands of years: lifting our voices together to praise God in the open air. Why sing the psalms in public?

Because Scripture commands it. We are told to address one another "in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody" to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). The psalter is God's own hymnbook, given to His people to put praise in our mouths.

And because praise was never meant to be hidden. The psalms repeatedly call us outward: "Sing to the LORD... declare his glory among the nations" (Psalm 96:1–3); "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands" (Psalm 100:1); "I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples" (Psalm 57:9). To sing God's praise in the public square is simply to obey that call — to declare in public that the Lord reigns (Psalm 96:10).

When Paul and Silas sang hymns in prison, the other prisoners were listening (Acts 16:25). We don't sing to perform, but we're glad to be overheard.
